Prime Minister Kim Min-seok held a public briefing on the bid to host the Global AI Hub at the Government Complex Seoul on the afternoon of the 24th, presenting the current progress and future direction of South Korea’s initiative.

What is the Global AI Hub?

The Global AI Hub is an initiative designed to bring together AI-related functions currently dispersed across various United Nations agencies, specialized organizations, and cooperative bodies into a single collaborative platform. By consolidating these capabilities, the Hub aims to strengthen coordination, enhance efficiency, and accelerate international cooperation in the field of artificial intelligence.

Proposed by the Government of the Republic of Korea to the United Nations, the initiative reflects the country’s ambition to play a leading role in shaping the future of global AI governance and collaboration.

International Engagement and Recent Progress

As part of efforts to advance the bid, Prime Minister Kim visited the United Nations Headquarters in New York and Geneva, Switzerland from the 16th to 17th of last month. During the visit, he met with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and the heads of several UN specialized agencies to discuss the vision and potential framework of the Global AI Hub.

The visit produced tangible results. South Korea signed Letters of Intent (LOIs) with six UN organizations to cooperate on the establishment of the Global AI Hub:

  • International Labour Organization (ILO)
  • International Organization for Migration (IOM)
  • International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
  • World Health Organization (WHO)
  • World Food Programme (WFP)
  • United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)

Prime Minister Kim’s Vision

Speaking at the first Global AI Hub Bid Committee meeting and public briefing, Prime Minister Kim stated that South Korea is moving beyond its traditional role as a follower and is now prepared to take on a leadership position in the global community.

“South Korea is transitioning from a follower on the global stage to a leader guiding the world. The Global AI Hub was conceived to drive global AI cooperation during this era of AI transformation.”

He explained that the Global AI Hub would serve as a platform encompassing several critical pillars, including:

  • Technological advancement
  • Global order and rules
  • Ethical standards
  • AI democracy and public trust

Prime Minister Kim also stressed the importance of sustained momentum, noting that the government would promptly implement follow-up measures under strong political leadership and through close coordination between the steering committee and relevant ministries.

Broader National Vision

Representative Cha Ji-ho of the Democratic Party of Korea emphasized that this is a decisive moment for South Korea to help shape international AI standards. He pledged to promote the national vision of an “AI basic society”—a society in which all citizens can enjoy a fundamental quality of life supported by AI technologies—on the global stage.

Kim Woo-chang, National AI Policy Secretary at Cheong Wa Dae, also highlighted that the Global AI Hub is being pursued as a strategic base for expanding the AI basic society agenda. He added that, as international consensus and cooperation on AI develop rapidly, South Korea aims to broaden partnerships and foster an ecosystem that carefully balances innovation with public value.

Why It Matters

The Global AI Hub represents more than a physical or institutional center. It reflects a broader vision for how countries, international organizations, and civil society can work together to shape AI in a way that is innovative, inclusive, ethical, and globally beneficial.

By advancing this initiative, South Korea seeks to position itself at the forefront of global AI governance—helping build a future in which AI development serves humanity, strengthens international cooperation, and creates shared public value.
