South Korea Accelerates Bid for Global AI Hub with UN Partnerships and Strategic Vision
March 24, 2026 | Seoul, South Korea
Prime Minister Kim Min-seok announced South Korea’s progress and future roadmap for hosting the Global AI Hub during a public briefing held at the Government Complex Seoul on March 24.
The initiative, proposed to the United Nations, aims to establish a centralized platform that integrates artificial intelligence-related functions from various UN agencies, specialized organizations, and international cooperation bodies to enhance global collaboration.
“South Korea is transitioning from a follower to a global leader. The Global AI Hub will serve as a key platform to drive international cooperation in the era of AI transformation,” Prime Minister Kim stated.
Strengthening Global Partnerships
As part of diplomatic efforts to advance the initiative, Prime Minister Kim visited the United Nations headquarters in New York and Geneva earlier this month. During these visits, he held meetings with UN Secretary-General António Guterres and leaders of major UN agencies.
The discussions resulted in the signing of Letters of Intent (LOIs) with six UN organizations to cooperate on the establishment of the Global AI Hub:
- International Labour Organization (ILO)
- International Organization for Migration (IOM)
- International Telecommunication Union (ITU)
- World Health Organization (WHO)
- World Food Programme (WFP)
- United Nations Development Programme (UNDP)
According to the government, these agreements mark a significant step toward building international consensus and institutional support for the Global AI Hub initiative.
A Platform for AI Governance and Cooperation
The Global AI Hub is envisioned as a comprehensive platform addressing key dimensions of artificial intelligence, including technological innovation, global governance frameworks, ethical standards, and democratic values.
Prime Minister Kim emphasized the importance of strong political leadership and inter-ministerial coordination to ensure rapid implementation of follow-up measures.
Advancing the “AI Basic Society” Vision
Representative Cha Ji-ho of the Democratic Party highlighted that the current moment represents a critical opportunity for South Korea to lead global AI standards. He reiterated the country’s vision of an “AI basic society”, where all citizens benefit from AI-driven improvements in quality of life.
Meanwhile, Kim Woo-chang, National AI Policy Secretary, noted that the Global AI Hub will serve as a strategic base for expanding this vision globally. He emphasized the importance of building an ecosystem that balances technological innovation with public value.
Global Responsibility and Inclusive AI
During meetings with UN leaders, Prime Minister Kim stressed South Korea’s commitment to multilateralism and its role as a responsible global partner. He highlighted the importance of ensuring that AI development reflects the needs of the Global South and vulnerable populations.
The initiative also aligns with the broader goal of achieving “AI for All”, promoting inclusive, ethical, and sustainable use of artificial intelligence worldwide. :contentReference[oaicite:0]{index=0}
